“Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you will feed him for life.”

The mission to integrate people into the workforce is at the heart of the activities at Renaissance. “Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you will feed him for life.”  This Chinese proverb was an inspiration for the founders of Renaissance inciting them to act in order to break the poverty cycle by offering the disadvantaged the tools to develop their abilities and to gain autonomy by integrating into the workforce.

The job training program: a gateway to the job market

Since 1995, Renaissance has been a member of the “Collectif des entreprises d’insertion du Québec”. As such, it was able to create a unique and independent job training model which helps with the participant’s socio-professional development. This job training literally changes the lives of hundreds of people each year. It helps to boost their confidence, self esteem and their autonomy.

The twenty-six week paid job training program offers theoretical training linked to practical concrete work experience within the Renaissance network. The training is offered in retail sales, housekeeping, stock handling and bookkeeping. The participant who follows the training is continually supported and accompanied by a socio-professional counsellor and the management staff. The counsellor oversees the progress of the participant towards his goals and equips him for his return into the workforce. The management team shares its expertise, encouragement and highlights the acquired competencies daily.

Emploi-Québec, an ongoing support for Renaissance

Since 1996, Emploi-Québec has supported both the mission and the job training program at Renaissance. Without this valued partner, there is no doubt that Renaissance would not have become the organization that it is today. The financing agreement to support the participants’ salaries as well as those of the training staff to a rate of 15% of the organization’s total budget demonstrates an important level of trust and permanent encouragement.
